Exam Stress Management: A Guide to Success

Exam stress is a natural response, but excessive anxiety can negatively impact focus and memory recall. Managing it effectively requires a balance of smart preparation and physical self-care.

First, structure your preparation by breaking the syllabus into manageable sections. Practice smart study habits like the Pomodoro technique—studying in 25–30 minute intervals followed by short breaks—and use active recall to test your knowledge rather than passively reading notes.

Second, prioritize foundational health. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, stay hydrated, and eat nutrient-dense meals. Short walks or light exercise during study breaks help lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and reset your concentration.

Finally, if panic strikes in the exam hall, take slow, deep breaths (in hale for 4 seconds, hold, and exhale slowly) to calm your nervous system. Address simpler questions first to build momentum. Remember, an exam measures your preparation, not your ultimate worth.
